Big Boy.

We had our ten week well baby check up today, even though Adam is a solid 11.5 weeks. He is also a solid chunk of baby - over thirteen pounds now, and almost a full pound bigger than Ellie was at the same age. And his head, while it doesn't look as big, is in the 98th percentile. I can't say I'm surprised. The visit went well and the doctor pronounced him perfect, which, DUH. The bad news is that he got two shots, and is currently slightly feverish and sleeping in the Moby wrap while I rock him in the recliner and pat his little behind. The fancy recliner is the best baby product, hands down. I wish we'd had it when Ellie was born.

It's been a rather long couple of days. The other day it took me two hours to get Ellie down for a nap, and then Adam didn't sleep more than 30 minutes at a clip. Yesterday he was awake and vaguely crabby from 4pm until bed time. It's just hard to feel like the second I get one kid placated, the other one is awake and needing attention. Can't mama catch a break? Plus then I have my jerk cats all up in my face. While waiting for me to get Adam to sleep last night Lulu helpfully went and turned over their water bowl. All my little animals, competing to see who I should murder first!

And I was on my own for bath and bed time last night. The good news is that Ellie was a great listener and hardly a crab apple. She can be so very sweet at the end of the day, and so snuggly during book and song time (Adam entertained himself with some screaming in his swing after a ten minute cat nap.) Then after much eating and rocking Adam went to sleep around 9:30....

...and didn't make a peep until 6:15am. YESSSSSSSS. We actually had to wake Ellie at 8 to get her ready for preschool. DOUBLE YESSSSSS.

The cats are still annoying of course. Though pre-nap time today it was pretty funny - I was nursing Adam, reading Ellie a book and using my free hand to pet Thor, who was so happy that he drooled all over my leg and the couch.

In This Light...

It looks like I just went and had the same baby twice.

Happy Birthday Mimi!

Yesterday we headed out to Yorba Linda after nap time to celebrate Mimi's recent birthday. Ellie was VERY excited about the prospect, as she loves to celebrate birthdays (and eat cake. Mostly, she likes to eat cake.) We got there just in time for our boat ride around the lake. Ellie got to wear her sweet new life vest, Adam got to sleep in the moby wrap, as he does.

We got to see plenty of baby ducklings, which were incredibly cute. Of course, Ellie's favorite part was when we spotted a bunny eating grass in someone's yard. She begged Pa to circle back to the bunny about ten times (and he indulged.) There was also some dancing on the boat, some demanding to splash around in the lake water, and the eating of many crackers.

And then of course, dinner and celebration time. Adam slept, Ellie mowed through a cupcake, and we all had some peach pie, which I made using the peaches from our tree. I am not generally a fruit pie person (pecan pie 4 life!) but man, it was a good pie, if I do say so myself. I foresee making more over the summer. The first boat ride of the season was a nice way to kick off the summer - it's going to be a busy one!

WINNER!

Tonight was Tim's company picnic at the Orange County fair grounds. We weren't able to go last year, so we were glad to get to attend this year, especially now that Ellie's big enough to participate in fun activities. And participate we did! We ate some fair food, we looked at the animals, we offered that she could get her face painted (she cried and said no) and we rode the carousel over and over and over again.

And I finally crossed something big off my bucket list, by entering the pie eating contest. I've always felt like I'd do well at competitive eating - I like to eat huge portions, I like to eat fast like the bowl is going to be ripped from me, and I hate to chew. I am basically a disgusting dinner date. BUT this makes me an excellent candidate for a pie eating contest.

So excellent in fact, that despite being the only contestant with a human baby sleeping in a carrier on their chest, I WON!

I got a sweet trophy and bragging rights!

Adam slept through the whole thing, no joke. Ellie cried through it, first because she wanted to come sit with me, and then because she's a toddler and likes to cry (when I asked her what was wrong afterwards, she wept about being too little to go on the giant slide.) Though sometime in the middle she told Tim "mommy needs a napkin" because we had to eat the whole thing without using our hands.

I am the one in the middle, looking like I'd like to die, and cradling the head of an infant. He's a useless team mate.

Shortly after my victory, I had to detour to the restroom, sick as a dog (so attractive!) but I managed to rally to rejoin the family, and to take Ellie on the ferris wheel.
She loved it! It almost made up for the fact that she was too little for the slide rides. Better luck next year kid!

Chatting with Ad Howe

He's a cute one, that's for sure.

Also, Lulu helps with tummy time.

Anecdotes.

Just some disjointed and random thoughts about the kiddos.

Adam is growing like a weed. He's solidly in all of his three month clothes, and some of his 3-6 month outfits. Some of the 3 month items are even a little too small! I forgot how fast babies require wardrobe changes. It's nice that we have several friends with baby boys, so when I'm done with stuff, I can just pack it up and move it out.

He smiles quite a lot, and coos often. He's generally a pretty happy little boy - willing to play in his play mat while I'm doing things around the house, very entertained by his sister, pretty flexible about letting everyone else hold him. He's begun to find and suck on his hands, which is great. Perhaps this time I will get a baby capable of self soothing! Mostly sleeping through the night, and would sleep all day in the Moby wrap, otherwise naps are sort of hit or miss, and sometimes I end up just sleeping in the recliner with him after he eats at 4am. He loves to be rocked and I love to sleep, so it all (sort of) works out.

His only real fault is that he doesn't care too much for the car seat or the stroller, which, tough nuggets to him, because we have places to go, people to see and walks to take for my sanity. I make sure he's clean and fed and drowsy and then hope for the best. Or walk incredibly fast so that I can get him home as soon as possible. He's like a terrible, mean, screaming personal trainer.

Meanwhile, Ellie continues to be obsessed with him. She likes to hand him toys in the car and snuggle with him whenever possible. Now that we've settled into our new family life (and now that I am not so stressed) her behavior has improved quite a bit in terms of time out worthy offenses. Sometimes she's so sweet that it just kills me - she'll demand to give me a huge hug while I'm putting her in the car and then say "I'm squeezing you to keep you safe!" Monday was Gigi and Grizz's anniversary and we bought them a card, and when she went over the first thing out of her mouth (unprompted) was "happy anniversary Grizz!" Then I prompted her to say "this place is a dump!" because they are having their plumbing redone and have lots of holes in the ceiling. And because I love the phrase "this place is a dump."

She's so imaginative and funny. She'll go on some big tangential story (wonder where she gets that from) and then at the end say "it's true!" Lately she's been telling me that we need to go to the zoo, and that we need to get a swingset for our house. I have no idea where she comes up with these ideas (the zoo we can do. We are not getting a swingset.) On our morning walks she likes to bring her binoculars (two toilet paper tubes taped together) and look for bunnies. She tells me she's going to grab one and pet it and it will be her friend. And it's going to be pink! There is also a lot of dancing around the house, and running naked whenever possible. I love how she says "neck-a-lace" and "oat-a-meal." Her new favorite food is fruit snacks (bunny shaped, of course) and she tries to weasel them into being a breakfast food. The good news is she LOVES vegetables - the other day she ate two ears of corn for dinner (one cooked, one not) and if we have broccoli with a meal, I usually end up having to make her eat a bite of meat before I'll get her more broccoli.

We have still made no progress towards potty training, which is frustrating. It's something on my list of things to tackle this summer, but she shows ZERO desire to even try to use the toilet, and right now it's not a fight I'm ready to fight. It's going to be embarrassing when she's twelve and wearing diapers to sleep overs, I guess.
